TEDxYouth@Aveiro Turned “Inside Out”

Before TEDxYouth@Aveiro, a TEDxYouthDay event, we decided to run an Inside Out Project, inspired by TED Prize winner JR’s wish.

One month ago, a wall on the Cathedral of Aveiro became covered with photos of members of the TEDxYouth@Aveiro planning team. More than 30 pupils that took part in the organization of this year’s TEDxYouth@Aveiro were challenged to convey a message with a different facial expression. They took photos of each other and pasted the posters up on the wall of the Cathedral of Aveiro. They turned a gray November day in Aveiro into a cheerful one with smiles:

TEDx communities turned “Inside Out”

In the past few months, there’s been a tremendous response from the TEDx community to 2011 TED Prize winner JR’s Inside Out Project.

Launched at TED2011, Inside Out is a global participatory art project to transform messages of personal identity into public art. Thus far over 40,000 individuals from all corners of the globe have used the project to take a stand and to share their personal stories with the world.

From Tokyo to Athens, Karachi to Lisbon, TEDx communities have been part of this movement, using the platform to talk about issues of importance to them. Some highlights:

TEDx Karachi called attention to the issue of discrimination against minority communities in Pakistan.

Through their group action, TEDxAveiro called attention to the unknown faces and stories of the city.

TEDxLisboa used Inside Out to shared the stories of senior citizens in their city.

TEDxAcademy focused their action on the truth that is seen in the eyes of immigrant children in the city.

TEDxHomer shared the stories of its sea captains, honoring them as the heart of their community’s economic life.

TEDxAmoskeagMillyard used their group action to challenge people’s assumptions about their neighbors, to bring together their community.

There are dozens more actions being planned around the world from Amman to Berlin, Belgrade and Dubai.

Learn more about starting an action on the Inside Out website. If you are a TEDx community and would like to start an action, reach out to Anna Verghese of the TED Prize team at anna@ted.com.

This Week’s TEDxTalks Playlist

Hundreds of talks from independently organized TEDx events around the world are published on the TEDxTalks website weekly.

Each Tuesday, we’ll choose four of our favorites, highlighting just a few of the enlightening talks from TEDx community, and its diverse constellation of ideas worth spreading. Browse all TEDxTalks here »

As non-lethal weapons become increasingly sophisticated and popular, the ethics of their use grows complicated. At TEDxCanberra, Stephen Coleman explores the ramifications of reliance on these weapons.

A new form of illiteracy has been formed from the 70% percent of the world’s population that lacks access to and knowledge of new technologies — a sharp digital divide. Aleph Molinari analyzes the consequences of this growing problem and offers some solutions.

John Downing argues that engaging individuals is key to building and strengthening communities. In this talk, he breaks down his theory of ”econoeduclusion”, and how to engage people meaningfully.

Sandra Fisher Martins discusses the consequences of difficult to understand but common legal documents — medical forms, lease agreements, bank statements — and her campaign for plain language.

The TEDxAveiro team — along with 30 students from 6 different local schools — is organizing TEDxYouth@Aveiro in Aveiro, Portugal on November 20, 2011, as a part of TEDxYouthDay.
To launch a promotional campaign for the event, we decided to paint a bus in the city center!
Why bus graffiti? Because the motto of this year’s event is “You Think, Therefore You Create,” and we wanted to showcase the creativity of our youth!
And we did! We invited our youth to participate in this project, and encouraged them to not be afraid of thinking and doing.
Everyone lent a hand and had the chance to make art on our bus. While everyone worked, four young musicians from one of the secondary schools that is participating in the organization of TEDxYouth@Aveiro played live music for the people who were there.
And the result was this amazing piece of work!
In Aveiro we believe in our youth. We believe that they will think constructively, think in innovative ways, and think forward. We believe that from this way of thinking, beautiful products will be created.
“Think globally, create locally.” This message and other powerful ideas from our motto were passed onto TEDxYouth@Aveiro bus graffiti and the outcome was amazing!
For the next five weeks, the “TEDxYouth@Aveiro bus” will be traveling around our city inviting our community to embrace the TEDxYouth@Aveiro event, to believe in our youth, and to be at “Teatro Aveirense” on November 20, 2011 – Universal Children’s Day.
Over the course of four hours, this bus was brightened up thanks to this creative work!
Welcome to TEDxYouth@Aveiro, where we believe in your creations.
